What to expect

How Interior Waterproofing Works

It manages water rather than stopping it at the source. That distinction is worth understanding before you compare quotes.

Assess the entry point

Water may enter through the wall, the floor-wall joint, a crack or all three. That decides the system.

Drainage channel

A channel along the interior perimeter of the footing collects water before it reaches the floor.

Sump pit and pump

The channel connects to a sump pit, and a pump sends water outside, away from the house.

Wall-face membrane

Dimple board or a membrane on the wall directs seepage down into the drain, and the floor-wall joint is sealed.

Backup

A battery backup keeps the pump running in a power outage.

Testing

A good installer tests the system before the area is closed up and finished. Then plan the subfloor and flooring around it, keeping access to the drain and pit.

When Interior Waterproofing Fits, and When It Does Not

Interior waterproofing is often chosen when excavating outside is impractical: mature landscaping, an attached garage, a shared wall, or a deck over the problem area. It is less suited when the real issue is a single wall crack or grading that pushes water at the house. In those cases crack repair or exterior waterproofing may fit better.

Interior Waterproofing Timeline Expectations

Interior waterproofing for a typical basement perimeter typically takes one to three days, since the work happens inside and is not weather-dependent the way exterior digging is.

  • No permit is usually needed for the drainage system itself, so review rarely adds a wait.
  • Breaking and repouring the concrete floor along the perimeter is the main time driver.
  • A battery backup and full system test add a short additional step.
  • Coordinating around finished areas, storage or mechanical equipment already in the basement can add time.

Common Mistakes Homeowners Make

Interior waterproofing gets chosen for the wrong reasons as often as the right ones:

  • Choosing interior drainage because it is less disruptive, without confirming it actually suits the entry point.
  • Not asking whether the sump pump and pit are sized for how much water the basement really sees.
  • Skipping the battery backup, then losing protection during the exact power outage a storm causes.
  • Finishing over the system without leaving access to the pit, pump and cleanouts.
  • Assuming interior waterproofing stops water at the source rather than managing water that has already arrived.

Permits and approvals

Toronto Building says installing a sump pump does not require a permit. Larger projects that include breaking the slab for new drains, underpinning or a renovation may involve permits, so confirm the whole scope.

Questions to ask a professional

  • Is an interior system the right fit, or would exterior work or a smaller repair address the cause?
  • How much of the perimeter is covered and why?
  • What backup do you provide if power fails (battery or water-powered backup), and is it included?
  • What is warranted, for how long, and in writing?

If water is entering through a visible crack, a targeted crack repair may be smaller and better. If exterior grading is pushing water toward the foundation, exterior waterproofing addresses the source.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between interior and exterior waterproofing?

Exterior waterproofing works from outside to keep water away from the foundation wall and needs excavation. Interior waterproofing collects and redirects water that has already reached the foundation.

Will interior waterproofing stop water entering the walls?

It manages water at the floor level. It does not seal the foundation wall itself, so an actively leaking crack may need separate repair.

How much does interior waterproofing cost in Toronto?

It scales with how much of the perimeter needs a system, whether a pit and pump exist, and access. Reno Rise does not publish prices. Get itemized quotes and compare what each includes.
